How We Build
We construct the majority of our pieces (including cabinets) using solid wood and traditional joinery. Joining solid wood members, and doing so appropriately, has long been the challenge of the woodworker. We are strongly influenced by the traditional joinery methods & principles developed/used during the Arts & Crafts movement. Equally influential are the joinery techniques of the long lineage of Japanese woodworkers as evidenced by the well worn copy of ‘Japanese Joinery’ in our office. It is the rare piece that leaves our shop without a Mortise and Tenon joint of some variety. Every drawer box is constructed with hardwood and the joints dovetailed (sometimes by machine, sometimes by hand). Both hand-crafted and modern production methods are employed in the construction of our pieces, dependent upon the piece and the interest of the client.
How We Finish
In all finishes we use either natural or environmentally-friendly finishes. We supply Product Information sheets for all finishing materials upon request.
Our Design Process
In every piece we build, our customers are actively involved in the design process. The dimensional constraints, stylistic/finish/species/hardware preferences, functional requirements, and overall presence are all conceived through direct collaboration with the customer in the space when possible. We encourage our customers to create folders full of photos from magazines, sketches, website images and anything that aids in clear communication of ideas. With this information we develop preliminary, scaled drawings, using 2D CAD. These drawings serve as a visual aid to further develop detail, and in some cases, significant change in the design. At every step we answer questions, offer advice and suggestions as requested, and try to allow for the creative process to thrive. In certain cases where 3D visualization is necessary we create rendered 3D studio models. Sometimes the process is quick and sometimes it takes much iteration. The goal is to arrive at a finished design with clear expectations prior to any wood purchase or milling. |
Urban Tree Project
We have an ‘Urban Tree’ project. Oftentimes quality urban trees are cut down and turned either into mulch or firewood. For the same cost, we will harvest and mill the tree, and once the lumber has satisfactorily air dried (which can take up to a year) will build with it a piece for our customer (note: if the price of the piece is more than the cost of harvesting and milling the lumber the balance is made up by the customer). It is a way to respect the tree that has been a part of our customer’s life, continuing it’s life as a part of theirs in a different form. In return we keep the remainder of the milled wood for our use. If you have a tree you’d like to take a look at please contact us at 303-722-2880.
Our Lumber Sources
The majority of our lumber comes from Paxton’s Wood Source or Austin Hardwoods. Our industry’s resource is wood. Preservation of our primary resource is practical and important. We are advocates of using sustainable lumber and use these sources when possible. While not all of the wood we use is sustainable, we are migrating in that direction.
